How to play
- Grab the key, then jump at the door to open it and win the round.
- If your rival has the key, land on their head to steal it.
- Touch a level's lever to shake things up for both of you. It needs a few seconds to recharge.
- A cup is five rounds on levels picked at random. Each round won earns a star, and the most stars wins the cup.
Starting a game
- 2 players: each player taps their own jump button on the title screen. When both show READY!, the cup starts.
- 1 player: tap 1 PLAYER VS CPU. The button shows the difficulty; change it under CPU in Settings. The computer plays the teal sprout. On Easy and Normal it gets sharper every round; on Hard it plays its best from the first round.
Controls
- In a 2-player game, each player uses the left, right, and jump buttons on their own side of the screen. Both players can press at the same time.
- Against the computer, the buttons on the left move you and the button on the right jumps.
- Hold jump to jump higher.
- With a keyboard connected, player 1 uses A, D, and W, and player 2 uses the arrow keys. Esc pauses, M turns the sound on or off, H turns haptics on or off, R opens practice and records, and 1, 2, or 3 starts a game against the computer on Easy, Normal, or Hard.
Practice and records
- Tap PRACTICE & RECORDS in the top-right corner of the title screen to see every level with your best time on it.
- Tap a level to play it alone against the clock. Beat your time and you'll see NEW BEST!
- Best times count from any round a person wins, in any mode. The same screen shows cups won against the computer on each difficulty, and how many 2-player cups you've played.
Settings
Tap SETTINGS in the top-left corner of the title screen. Your choices are remembered.
- Sound and Haptics turn game sounds and vibration on or off.
- Motion: Match iPhone follows your iPhone's Settings → Accessibility → Motion → Reduce Motion. Reduced turns off screen shake, flashing blocks, and blinking text in the game whatever your iPhone is set to; Full keeps them on.
- CPU: how tough the computer is in 1-player games: Easy, Normal, or Hard.
- Buttons: Large makes the on-screen controls bigger. On smaller iPhones they cover a little more of the level.
Pausing and quitting
Tap the pause button in the top-left corner during a round, then choose Resume, Sound, Haptics, or Quit. Quitting a practice run takes you back to the level list. If a call comes in or you leave the app mid-round, the game pauses itself.
No sound
- King of the Key follows the Ring/Silent switch. If your iPhone is set to silent, the game is silent too.
- Check the volume, and that sound isn't turned off in Settings or the pause menu.
- Music from another app keeps playing alongside the game's sounds.
Haptics
Grabbing or stealing the key, getting bonked, and opening the door make the phone vibrate. To turn this off, tap Haptics in Settings or the pause menu. If you feel nothing at all, check that Settings → Sounds & Haptics → System Haptics is on.
Records and new iPhones
Your best times and cup records are kept on your iPhone. King of the Key has no account, so they can't be synced. They come along when you set up a new iPhone from a backup of your old one; otherwise the new iPhone starts fresh. Deleting the app deletes your records.
